A Warm, Allergy Friendly Apple Compote for Busy Mornings

A comforting breakfast for busy families

As a baker and homeschool mum, I need recipes that respect my schedule. I don’t have hours to spare, but I still want nourishing dishes for my five children. This quick apple compote comes together in about fifteen minutes and fills our home with the scent of spiced apples. It’s a simple way to share warmth and nutrition before the day starts.

UK food law identifies 14 major allergens – celery, gluten‑containing cereals, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphites and tree nuts . At Cultured Bakehouse, we avoid all of them and at home, when we can. This compote fits that commitment and is free from every allergen on that list.

Ingredients (serves four)

  • 4 large apples (about 4 cups/600–800 g) diced . Choose a mix of sweet and tart apples for depth of flavour .

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water .

  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) pure maple syrup – a sulphite‑free sweetener substitute .

  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) fresh lemon juice .

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon .

  • ¼ tsp ground ginger .

  • Pinch of ground cloves or nutmeg (optional).

  • Pinch of sea salt.

Optional additions:

  • A splash of pure vanilla bean paste instead of extract to avoid alcohol or hidden allergens.

  • A handful of raisins or chopped dried apricots for extra sweetness.

Method

  1. Prepare the apples: Peel, core and dice the apples into 1 cm (½‑inch) chunks .

  2. Combine ingredients: Place the apples, water, maple syrup, lemon juice, spices and salt in a saucepan .

  3. Cook: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer .

  4. Simmer: Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the liquid thickens .

  5. Serve: Enjoy the compote warm or let it cool and store it in the fridge for up to a week .
